The Back-to-School Command Center
Wendy on building a family command center that catches papers, keys, and calendars before September chaos starts.

Hi there, it's Wendy from Room to Grow.
August is our quiet-before-the-storm month. Sports calendars, supply lists, new backpacks, and a hundred permission slips that have not even been printed yet. A command center is the system that keeps all of that from colonizing the kitchen island.
One wall, three jobs
A family command center only needs to do three things: show the week, catch the paper, and hold the launch-pad items (keys, badges, water bottles). If it tries to do more, it becomes clutter with a bulletin board.
Paper has a 24-hour rule
Mail and school papers get a shallow tray, not a pile. Once a day, file, recycle, or act. A pretty basket that hides a month of envelopes is not a system.
Put it where life already happens
The wall between the garage and the kitchen is usually the right place in Metro Detroit homes. You already pause there. Give that pause a job.
We install these in an afternoon. If you want September to feel less like a scramble, now is the moment.
