Detroit to Los Angeles: A Move That Lands
Wendy on a young couple’s Detroit-to-L.A. move: we edited and packed the Michigan house, arranged the movers, and Steven and I spent a week in Los Angeles unpacking the new home.

Hi there, it's Wendy from Room to Grow.
This one started in Detroit and ended in Los Angeles — a young couple, a house full of a life they actually liked, and a new city that was not going to wait for them to “get settled.” They did not need a bigger truck. They needed an edit, a packing plan, and someone to meet the boxes on the other side.
We did all three.
Edit first. Pack second.
Holly, Kelly, and I spent the Detroit days the way we always do before a move: every closet, the kitchen, the basement, the garage. Keep, donate, sell, leave. A move is the most expensive way to relocate clutter. If it was not earning its keep in Michigan, it was not going to earn a California closet.
We packed what remained with labels written for the new house, not the old one — “LA kitchen, daily,” “primary closet, hanging,” “guest linen.” The movers knew which boxes were first-night and which could wait in the garage.
Then we got on a plane.
Steven and I flew to Los Angeles for a week. The couple arrived to a house that already had a kitchen they could cook in, closets they could get dressed in, and a living room that did not look like a staging area. Unpacking is not emptying boxes. It is deciding, room by room, how this particular life is going to work in this particular light.
California houses live differently. Less mudroom, more entry tray. Less off-season bin, more linen and indoor-outdoor flow. We built systems for the home they have now, not a replica of the one they left.
What a destination week actually looks like
Day one: kitchen, beds, bathrooms. You cannot think in a house that cannot feed you or let you sleep. Days two and three: closets and the daily launch — keys, bags, the spot by the door. Midweek: living, office, the lingering “where does this go” pile. Last days: labels, a donate run, a walk-through so they can keep it without us.
Steven is the reason a week is enough. He can empty a truck, set a pantry, and still have the hanging done before anyone opens their own suitcase. I am grateful he is on these jobs.
Across town, or farther
Most of our days are still Metro Detroit — a closet, a kitchen, a move down the street. This one happened to need a plane. If you have a move on the books, write us. We will edit the house you are leaving, arrange the movers, and set up the one you are walking into.
More room, and a kitchen that works on night one. That is the whole job.
