Garage and Gear Season

Kelly on waking the garage up for spring: bikes, sports gear, and a floor you can actually park on.

Hey everyone, it’s Kelly!

April is when the garage remembers it is a room. Bikes want out. Cleats multiply. The car would like its parking spot back.

Zones, even in a garage

Sports. Tools. Seasonal. Household overflow. Vertical is your friend — hooks, a pegboard, a tall shelf. The floor is for cars and feet.

A landing for dirty gear

A bin for muddy cleats and a hook for bags that have not been emptied yet. If dirty and clean live together, dirty wins.

Be ruthless with “someday” sports

If nobody played it last season, donate the equipment. Someone else’s kid is waiting for that lacrosse stick.

We do a lot of garages in Oakland County this time of year. It is not glamorous. It is the project people thank us for all summer.
